King George Island, GIS
The Keller Peninsula (KP) is located on the
King George Island (South Shetland Archipelago), shelters the
Brazilian Comandante Ferraz Station (EACF) and it has been the
site from several international research projects. Geographic
Information Systems (GIS) were implemented to the King George
Island (KGIS project) and to the Admiralty Bay (AB GIS) but there
isn´t any implemented to the KP area in a detailed scale.
Recently, an EACF topographic plan at 1:500 scale and thematic
maps at a scale of 1:5,000 were produced to this peninsula. The
thematic maps consists on an orthophotomap, a topographic map, an
anaglyph, hypsometric, slope and aspect maps, available at
http://www.ufrgs.br/antartica.
The objective of the present work is to use these detailed and
georeferenced data (UTM projection) to build a KP GIS. The layers
available in the KP GIS are local toponyms, based on the Composite
Gazetteer of Antarctica (CGA), EACF buildings, lakes, an
orthophoto, coastline, elevation points, an anaglyph, contour
lines, hypsometric, slope and aspect data. Description, spatial
and attributes information are linked to each layer and can be
accessed by the user. The KP GIS is available at http://www.ufrgs.br/antartica
and all layers can be downloaded and stored in other GIS
environment. These data can be useful for multidisciplinary
purposes and can be integrated to the KGIS, AB GIS and to the
Antarctic Digital Database (ADD). Furthermore, this dataset can be
used with other georeferenced data for the generation of new
thematic maps.
