the modern already past | the past within the modern
recycling, re-qualifying, re-architecture

Porto Alegre, Oct. 22nd - 26th, 2007

Call for Works

Recycling, re-qualifying, re-architecture have become constant topics in the contemporary architect's agenda. This situation indicates both cultural and economic interests in preserving testimonies of the past, even those of a recent past. Amidst them we can also spot examples of the architecture that was established in 1928 proclaiming itself modern, entered an identity crisis around the 70s and may be considered nowadays heritage.

Such interests comprehend both ordinary and monumental buildings, regardless of their commitment to lastingness. It favors the coexistence in space of forms from distinct times; it associates with the multifaceted celebration of diversity. The esprit of contemporariness is neither exclusivist nor utopist. Strange is the idea of building - on tabula rasa - in a brave new world formally unified. It seems not only anachronic but culturally absurd and economically myopic too.

On the other hand, recycling, re-qualifying, re-architecture get generalized due to cultural and economic pressures that conspire against the preservation of testimonies of the past in their original appearance and function. In exceptional cases, turning the building into its own museum is a reasonable alternative, but even in such cases some sort of adapting intervention is imposed. Therefore conservation is more or less fragmentary and hybrid, product of a new and singular design.

Recycling, re-qualifying, re-architecture identify with this ambivalent design, whose raw material is part of a past form but is modern in its understanding as a usual activity today, although that part is modern in the particular sense of yesterday's form. The paradoxes they propose deserve vast and deep examination. VII Docomomo Brasil Seminar and III Projetar thematic integration and sequential scheduling make it possible.

VII Docomomo Brazil Seminar Organizing Commission invites architecture professors, students and professionals to send work proposals for Scientific Commission appreciation, aiming at presentation and publication in October. Proposals can fit into two major groups:

RD group embraces two sorts of generic reflections, being they either disassociated or combined:
1. Discussion of recycling, re-qualifying and re-architecture of 1920-1970 modern works' multiple dimensions;
2. Discussion of their implications on contemporary architect's background and practice.

CD group embraces three sorts of case studies:
1. Documentation and analysis of recycling, re-qualifying and re-architecture of pre-modern works by modern architects between 1920 and 1970;
