Background
The
Publishing House of UFRGS (Federal
University of Rio Grande do Sul) promotes the production, edits,
coedits, makes the diffusion and the commercialization of books of any
nature which may interest the goals of the teaching, the research and
the extension, in the areas of the university activity; it facilitates
to students, teachers and staff the access to the academic production of
the universities; it promotes bibliographic exchange with other
universities, libraries and similar entities; it develops and carries
out other activities linked to the editorial area.
The Publishing House of UFRGS is a supplementary organ linked to the
Pro-Rectory of Extension. It was created officially on March 19, 1971,
being subordinated to the Publication Committee (installed on March 6,
1970). Although very young, it is one of the most important Brazilian
academic publishing houses. Nowadays, it has about 400 titles in its
catalog, with books of areas of great knowledge. Along its journey, it
has already published over 800 titles, many of them having received
prizes in various segments of the cultural and scientific world. It is a
partner-founder of the Brazilian Association of the University
Publishing Houses (ABEU), takes part in the Program for University Book
Distribution (PIDL) and is associated with the Rio-grandense Chamber of
the Book. Through the ABEU, it participates in the
main national and international events of the book and, since
1978, it is present in the Book Fair of Porto Alegre. It is also present
in events at UFRGS, in the state and in the city.
Selection of books for
publication
Most book titles of the Publishing House of UFRGS' catalog
are of authors of the institution itself, selected according to their
academic relevance. The editorial politics and the selection of books
for publication are responsibility of the Publishing
House Council, composed of ten members representing the faculty
community, with a two-year mandate (having the rights of being
reelected) and representatives of several fields of knowledge. The
verification of merit for publication is under the responsibility of the
Council itself or based on written opinion emitted by an consulted
analyst. The great majority of the books approved for publication is
edited in the Publishing House itself and pressed in the print house of
UFRGS or in a reliable print house.
Professional staff
Besides the Direction and the Publishing Council, the
Publishing House of UFRGS counts on the Administrative and Financial
Division, the Editorial Division and the Commercial and
Distribution Division; the Diffusion Division and the Council
Department, which are now in phase of implantation, are in charge of
dealing with all aspects involved in the book publication and in the
searching for alternative solutions concerning old problems of editing,
commercialization and diffusion of a public teaching institution. Its functional
board is composed of career clerks, people hired by the FAURGS
(Support Foundation of UFRGS) and trainees. The Publishing House is
self-sufficient in almost all phases of editing, even having a small
team. Technical works are carried out by professionals of the visual
arts, librarianship, social communication and letters areas. The team
formation may vary from university undergraduation in progress to the
graduation members.
