Faculty of Medical Sciences

History

The Faculty of Medical Sciences was founded on July 25th 1898, initially named Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of Porto Alegre. The course began its activities in 1899 and constituted the third medical school in Brazil, preceded only by the Schools of Medicine from Salvador (Bahia) and Rio de Janeiro, founded in 1808.

In 1924 the building on Sarmento Leite Street was officially inaugurated. Until 1974, this rich architectural structure hosted the Faculty of Medicine. After the construction of the Clinical Hospital (Hospital de Clínicas,) the majority of the department was transferred. The original building now hosts the Institute of Biosciences and the Institute of Health Sciences, where the basic disciplines are taught.

At the Clinical Hospital, many laboratories are offered to students, including the Informatics’, Surgical Technique’s, Nutritional Assessment’s, Clinical Skills’ and Dietary Techniques’. Moreover, they can study and conduct research at the FAMED/ HCPA Library, located at Ramiro Barcelos Street, 2400, 3rd floor.

Undergraduate Programs

Medicine:

The course aims at a general education in medicine, enabling students to care for the overall health of children, adults, pregnant women and the elderly; rendering assistance to the most predominant health problems and treating these with the most advanced care; establishing an adequate professional relation with patients, families and the community, respecting ethical norms; of assessing scientific works, elaborating and executing research projects, and of continuing his/her medical education autonomously. In order to fulfill the curriculum of the Medicine course, 598 credits are required.

Nutrition:

The course aims at a general education of the student in Nutrition, making students capable of acting, guided by ethical principles, in all areas where Nutrition is fundamental to the promotion and recovery of health, and also in the prevention of diseases, all contributing to the improvement and quality of life. Students are also expected to work in research and extension.

  • Collective Feeding, Public Health;
  • Food Industry;
  • Nutrition in Sports.
