Institute of Health Sciences

The Institute of Health Sciences is an interdisciplinary institute, with the aim of developing human resources in different biomedical focuses. It was founded in 1996, and its administration is located at 500 Sarmento Leite Street, in the city of Porto Alegre, the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. It has sectors located in different campi of our University. The central building was constructed in 1924 and it hosted the Faculty of Medical Sciences until 1974, as well as the Institute of Biosciences until 1996.

Professors in this Institute are involved in important research projects aimed to interact with the community, and for national scientific and technological development. Our academic staff has a strong participation in international forums – journal editorial boards, conference program committees and scientific societies. With publications and international accords with institutions from different countries, the Institute makes valid efforts to create an international involvement.

Undergraduate and Graduate Programs

The Institute has one undergraduate major (Biomedicine) and five Graduate Programs: Biochemistry, Physiology, Neurosciences, Agricultural and Environmental Microbiology, and Education in Sciences, Life and Health Chemistry.

The Biomedicine major was created in 2003 and was officially recognized by the Brazilian Ministry of Education in 2007. 24 other departments from 14 different Academic Units of the University also collaborate with the Program offering many courses. It aims to form generalized professionals, able to analyze in different areas related to this profession. The course has ranked among the best in the country according to the Brazilian Ministry of Education. Each year, 36 students start their BSc degree in Biomedicine.

The Institute holds five graduate courses, mentioned below:

  1. Biochemistry (Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciências Biológicas – Bioquímica):
  2. Physiology (Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciências Biológicas – Fisiologia):
  3. Neurosciences (Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciências Biológicas – Neurociências):
  4. Agricultural and Environmental Microbiology (Programa de Pós-Graduação em Microbiologia Agrícola e do Ambiente):
  5. Education in Sciences, Life and Health Chemistry (Programa de Pós-Graduação em Educação em Ciências, Química da Vida e Saúde):

These courses have 143 faculty members and over 215 MSc and 185 PhD students. Most of the students receive scholarships from Brazilian funding agencies. The courses are ranked among the best in the country and many of them have international cooperation agreements.

Our Institute has 40 official research groups (, in which the faculty members are leaders and/or researchers. All the members of these groups are active both in research and teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in their areas. 121 research lines developed by our Graduate Programs comprehend a wide set of scientific areas related to biomedical sciences. Around 120 professors, distributed amongst 5 departments (Biochemistry, Physiology, Morfological Sciences, Microbiology and Pharmacology), develop several projects.
