Nursing School

The Nursing School of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, UFRGS, is the pioneer school in Southern Brazil. The initiative of its establishment was taken by Dr. Luiz Francisco Guerra Blessmann, who appealed to the Special Service of Public Health, indicating the nurses and faculties Maria de Lourdes Verderese and Olga Verderese to start a Nursing Faculty in Rio Grande do Sul. It remained a part of the Faculty of Medicine until July 16th 1968, when it then became autonomous.

UFRGS’ Graduate Programs in Nursing offers Doctorate and Academic Master Courses. It began in 1998, with the Academic Master Course. In 2006, the first Doctorate group began.


PPGENF’s objectives are to provide students with a solid foundation of Nursing and Health information; to consolidate the development of scientific methodology; to promote the production and the expansion of advanced knowledge in this area.

Objectives of the Nursing Doctorate Program:

  1. To educate students with a qualified Doctorate level for teaching and research activities in Nursing and Healthcare.
  2. To develop knowledge and new technologies in Nursing and Healthcare areas so as to respond to social needs, and to influence changes in the health care systems.


High qualified professionals with skills and experience in research, who use theoretical-methodological tools of the Fundamental and Best practices of Nursing and Health, in addition to acting in the building of human resources, in college education and in the production of regional, national and internationally relevant information.

Objectives of the Nursing Master Program:

  1. To equip qualified Masters with skills for teaching activities, and to develop a dedication to Nursing and Health research activities.
  2. To reinforce Nursing research, teaching and work, enabling graduating Masters to be capable of reflection and production of theoretical frameworks and technologies for health.
