The professor Marcia Barbosa, director of the UFRGS Physics Institute, is one of the scientists to be honored with the 15th L'Oréal-Unesco Award for Women and Science, announced by Unesco on October 19th. She was awarded for discovering a water anomaly “that may lead to a better understanding of the mechanism of proteins folding, which is essential for the treatment of some diseases”,  exclaimed the ONU for Education, Science and Culture.

The PI professor received the award along with four other scientists: Reiko Kuroda from Japan, Nneka Okeke from Nigeria, Deborah Jin from the USA and Pratibha Gai from England. The five award wininng scientists will receive 100.000 dollars at a ceremony on March 18 2013, in Paris.

The program For Women and Science, that has already awarded 77 women in the last 15 years, includes an annual series of scholarships aimed at international, regional and national research.
