Critical and accurate information on the key risk factors are necessary for basing decisions in disease management, either for strategic (choice of cultivar, planting dates, etc) or for tactical (fungicide applications) decisions. Monitoring and mapping disease occurrence and climatic risk may be useful to anticipate conditions favorable or unfavorable for plant disease outbreaks. Such information should be available and delivered to decision makers in a timely manner.
In this project, technology was implemented to deliver information on soybean rust risk for all production regions of Brazil. The system is open-access and allows the user to monitor disease occurrence in space and time through through a web-based mapping tool. In addition, risk maps based on observed and forecast rainfall for up to 15 days were produced during three growing seasons (2009-10 and 2011-12).
