The
Curriculum, Culture and Society Studies Group - NECCSO - was organized
by researchers whose main interest is the contemporary cultural
analyses of education. The initial impulse for the group’s
action and the option for cultural themes and the multidisciplinary
approach are consequence of shared agreement about the significance
of cultural studies related to educational field. The crucial educational
questions must, at the present time, contemplate cultural diversity,
the social relations’s multiplicity and the discourse orders
that produce what we understand as “educational reality”.
NECCSO’s main target is encouraging studies and initiatives that
may have any impact or social echo on and contribute to designing
democratic social policies.

Ongoing and under-project studies at NECCSO are about problematisations
involving cultural practice and artefacts. The approach we have
used favours issues such as language, power, discourse and representation.
Artefacts, normative and prescriptive devices (films, newspapers,
magazines, pictures, songs, ads, books, laws, rhetoric, methods,
styles, religious codes, tradition, etc.), among so many cultural
productions, constitute fertile fields for our analysis. We share
the belief that understanding how these artefacts operate critically
act upon our decisions and educational choices.
