Lines of research

These are thematic domains or groups of activities from the Program, characterized by the development of studies with common research objects or methodologies. (CAPES 2001)

Socio-environmental Dynamics in the Rural Environment

This research furthers the debate and the academic reflection about the main contemporary social theories that deal with development, incorporating the environmental issue and interdisciplinarity. It analyzes the use of the rural and agricultural environment inside a sustainability perspective in its different dimensions. It identifies and analyzes the influences and determinations of the "environmental component" on the dynamic of agricultural production systems.

State, Public Policies and Rural Development

This research focuses on the State and its part as a system for regulation, planning and social control. It analyzes the process of formulating and implementing public policies, discussing social demands and the relationship with private institutions. It identifies and analyzes the economic and social effects of public policies on Brazilian agricultural and rural development. It studies the transformations happening nationally and internationally regarding the organization, functioning and competitiveness in the economic activities of the rural environment, as well as the impact on its economic and social outcomes. It investigates the creation of agribusiness compounds, analyzing the relationships between the industry that provides materials, agricultural production, the processing industry, distribution and consumption of agricultural-based products.

Political-cultural mediations, Productive Structures and Social Forms in the Rural World

This research analyzes the diversity and heterogeneity of agricultural social forms. It investigates the associations between social processes and transformations in the agricultural technical standards, the changes in production, the use of the land, the relationships between sectors and the structure of occupations and work processes in agricultural environments.  It studies the social forms of production and the work relationships that exist in the rural environment. It emphasizes the political, ideological and cultural mediations, the proposing actors and social components, the unions, the social movements, the organizations and public and private institutions. It investigates the changes in social, ethnical, racial and cultural transformations resulting from processes of exclusion and marginalization. It analyzes the changes in succession processes and transference of patrimony, and the breaks in the patterns of reciprocity and sociability in the rural world.
