2. CPF – Cadastro de Pessoa Física (Social Security Number)

The CPF (Social Security Number) is necessary in Brazil for several situations, such as: financial activities (for example, to open a bank account), acquisition of goods in Brazil (such as a cell phone) and to request public and private services; besides, you will need a CPF to request a bus card, the Cartão TRI (more information below), which gives you discounts for several services including transportation, movies, theater and soccer games.

To get your CPF number, go to a Banco do Brasil Agency or a Post Office Agency, provide the data requested by the attendant and pay a tax of R$5,70. To accomplish this procedure, you must have the Protocolo da Polícia Federal (Federal Police Protocol – a document given to you at the Federal Police Office) and your passport.

The nearest Banco do Brasil Agency is in Block 2 at the Campus do Centro, in front of the Museum.

After 48 hours, you should go to Receita Federal (Av. Loureiro da Silva, 445, Centro, Phone: (51) 3228-2802), with:

  • Proof-of-payment for the tax of R$5,70;
  • Passport;

  • Federal Police Protocol;
  • Document with parents names, if this information is not listed on the passport.

The CPF number is given at this moment, though the card is sent by mail to the address you have submitted and will take one to two weeks to arrive.

Relinter Tip: We suggest you request your CPF at Banco do Brasil Agency because it offers a computerized procedure (while the post-office does not). Therefore, all data is registered in the computer enabling the CPF card to be sent in a shorter time.

4. Enrollment Process

The process of enrollment for international students is different from the one for regular students. The international student enrollment is done individually with the UFRGS online enrollment system. The international student can not directly access the enrollment system and the assistance of responsible offices is necessary throughout the process.

This process can be followed by the student by accessing the UFRGS site (, and by following the options Serviços > Consultas > Processos. The field Código do Processo has to be filled in with the protocol number the student has (Número do Processo de Matrícula).

If you do not have this number, contact Relinter to request this information.

The conclusion of the enrollment process, followed by the request for the UFRGS ID Card, will generate a protocol number for enrollment, which officially links the student to UFRGS and to UFRGS system.

5. Meeting your Tutor

The Tutor is a faculty member (professor) responsible for the student. Your tutor should help you to enroll in classes, guiding you in the academic process and answering questions about academic activities.

Your Tutor is assigned by Relinter, which contacts the Undergraduation Commission (COMGRAD) of your major or field of study and requests an available professor to help you during your period of studies at UFRGS. Relinter mediates contact between the professor and the student.

If you still do not have a Tutor, please, contact Relinter.

6. UFRGS ID Card

As soon as you acquire your enrollment number, you should go to the Identification Center (SAE – Secretaria de Assuntos Estudantis – Building 1255, Campus Central, next to Banco do Brasil, in front of Bar do Antônio) to request your UFRGS ID card. The UFRGS ID Card is necessary for several important activities at UFRGS, such as using cafeterias (RU), computer labs and libraries.

With the same enrollment number, you can access the student Portal (, where all your academic information is. There you can check your situation at UFRGS, your grades, which courses you are enrolled in, and so on. It is important to verify if the courses at the Portal are correct.

To access the Portal, it is necessary to fill in the field Usuário with the enrollment number and your password in Senha. The password should be requested by phone: (51) 3308-5333. By calling this number and requesting a password, you will be able to register a password and have access to the Portal.
