The postgraduate Program in phytotechnics offers training in master's and doctoral levels. The Master began its activities in 1965, as part of the postgraduate course in Agronomy, and the doctorate in 1987. Both levels are accredited by the Ministry of Education, with the concept of "5" in the latest assessment of the CAPES.
The Postgraduate Program in Phytotechnics of UFRGS offers seven emphases:

The Postgraduate Program in Phytotechnics infrastructure is based on the Departments of Plant Health, Horticulture and Foresty, Crop plants and Forage Plants and Agrometeorology. These four departments are linked to the Faculty of Agronomy of UFRGS.The PPG Phytotechnics has access to experimental areas by the Agricultural Experimental Station of UFRGS, in the municipality of Eldorado do Sul, at 55 km from Porto Alegre. The station has an infrastructure to support field work, such as human resources, equipment and laboratories. The EEA / UFRGS has approximately 1600 hectares that make up a great outdoor laboratory, working actively since its inception in the 1960s.The joint action by the Departments of the Faculty of Agriculture and the team from the EEA / UFRGS itself enables a strong link between the areas of Plant Breeding, Soil and Zootechnics, and other support areas (botanical ecology, genetics, etc.) in complete, embracing and applied type of researches.
The RESEARCH LABORATORIESexisting at the headquarters of the Faculty of Agronomy meet a series of requirements for training of students. The following laboratories are fully operational:
Crop plants - testing of seeds and seedlings in growth chambers.
Laboratory of Tissue Culture and Vegetal Cytogenetic
Crop plants - examination of cell structures, macrosomic analysis and genetic transformation.
Laboratory of Physiology
Crop plants - chemical and biochemical analyzes of plants.
Laboratory of Molecular Genetics
Crop plants - molecular markers applied to plant improvement.
Forage Plants and Agrometeorology - installation, calibration and testing of macro and micro-meteorological and analysis instruments of plant growth.
Discomfort Diagnostic Laboratory
Plant Health Analysis - discomfort of cultivated plants.
Psychopathological Microbiology Laboratory
Plant Health - chromosomal and molecular genetic analysis of phytopathogenic microorganisms. Biological control of phytopathogens
Plant Health - analysis and experimentation with plant pathogenic bacteria.
Winter Cereals Laboratory
Plant Health - emphasizes epidemiology, genetic control and the main winter cereal pathogens resistance.
Biology Laboratory of Ecology of Insects
Plant health - aims to elucidate aspects of the life cycle, survival strategies and population dynamics of insect pests and their natural enemies.
Molecular Phytopathology Laboratory
Plant health - analysis and application of molecular markers in order to obtain plant resistance to discomfort and genetic transformation.
Plant Epidemiology Laboratory
Plant health - study of factors that lead to epidemics in plant diseases through mathematical models aimed at understanding and predicting plant diseases.
Postharvest Physiology Laboratory
Horticulture y Forestry - analysis of the quality of vegetables, determining the parameters of maturation of horticultural products.
Horticulture y Forestry - experimental routines micropropagation and production of vegetables for regional producers.
Substrate Analysis Laboratory
Horticulture y Forestry - physical and chemical characterization of the substrates; studies with alternative materials for their uses as substrate.
Laboratory of Molecular Biotechnology in Horticulture
Horticulture and forestry - methods of application of molecular markers in horticultural plants.
Besides these laboratories, belonging to departments of the PPG Phytotechnics, the Faculty of Agriculture has other laboratories that also assist in the implementation of research works of the students, as the Soil Testing Laboratory and Laboratory of Animal Nutrition.
The PPG Phytotechnics uses, as access to scientific information, the collection of the Sectorial Libraries of UFRGS, especially from the Faculty of Agriculture, Institutes and other faculties (Botanical, Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Biotechnology, Genetics, Chemistry and Zoology) and also the Central Library of the UFRGS. These hold a specialized collection in their respective areas and provide quick and easy access for students and teachers. Teachers and students also have easy access to databases (CAB, AGRINDEX, and Web of Science) and the Journal CAPES Portal, for bibliographic queries. UFRGS is also connected to information commutation service between libraries in Brazil and abroad, allowing users to retrieve scientific articles necessary for their studies.
PPGPhytotechnics has computer labs for their researches in order to facilitate postgraduate students and interns access to email and Internet. Computers include the main programs of analysis and data processing necessary for most of the requirements of the students. PPG Phytotechnics may also dispose of the help of the Nucleus of Informatics, from the Faculty of Agronomy, of UFRGS, for physical and technical support. When programs or techniques, not available within the scope of the Faculty of Agronomy, are required, UFRGS has all the services of The Data Processing Center and the Institute of Informatics, Institute of Mathematics and the Center for Remote Sensing for support in most specific cases.
