The Postgraduate Program in Soil Science aims at training qualified personnel to carry out the activities of teaching, researching and technological development in Soil Science and its dissemination. The Masters course aims to train students through specialized disciplines, by configuring an area of concentration, of conduction of oriented research, which will seek the student´s introduction in the field of critical thinking and familiarity with the scientific method, the preparation and defense of dissertation, and consequently the writing of scientific papers for publication in professional journals. The Doctorate aims to allow students to explore some of the basic sciences, providing solid fundamental knowledge in studying disciplines at an advanced level in Soil Science and other scientific areas related to their field of interest (related domain areas) giving depth and breadth of knowledge and the acquisition of experience in research, along with the ability of autonomy, and critical and independent scientific attitude.Students are encouraged to properly build the scientific object, to formulate critical debates with literature and theorize it, being able to propose hypotheses and to develop methods to test them.

The Postgraduate Program in Soil Science is offered at the masters and doctoral levels. The Master began its activities in 1965, with then, postgraduate course in Agronomy, and doctorate in 1987. The Ministry of Education accredits both levels, taking note 5 on the latest assessment of the CAPES.So far the program has trained 323 Masters and 103 Doctors, whose significant majority  occupies or occupied positions of responsibility and leadership in the most qualified public institutions of education, research and extension of the country, as well as some companies and institutions  private capital. The complete dissertations and doctoral thesis and their full content, as well as articles, summaries and events produced by teachers and students of the program are available on the Scientific Content in Soil Science (SCSS).

Regional insertion

The PPG in Soil Science took leadership and performance role in key programs and studies to improve soil properties and production capacity, including:a) Program for Improving Soil fertility of the State; b) preparation of recommendations charts for fertilizer and correctives for principal crops of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina; c) studies on soil water erosion in Rio Grande do Sul, under natural rainfall and simulated rain;d) regarding soil microbiology, integration with the State Foundation for Agricultural Research, the PPG teachers conducted research on nitrogen fixation and technological development of inoculants with efficient strains of Rhizobium for the most important legume crops in  Rio Grande do Sul;e) studies on soil use as a means for disposal and inactivation of potentially polluting waste as compounds of garbage, treatment plants sewage , leather processing industries waste , petrochemical waste, etc .;f) provide services through its Laboratory of analysis of soil, water, plants, and waste, with routine methodologies developed by the research work of the PPG in Soil Science at UFRGS. This work reaches the state and its farmers, and it is responsible today for the vast majority of analyzes of soil fertility purposes.

International insertion

PPGCS international insertion occurs through agreements, alliances and exchanges. Among the agreements, the Brinding Genomics and Agrosystem Management project highlights: Resources for Adaptation and Sustainable Production of forage Lotus species in Environmentally-Constrained South-American Soils with the countries of South America (Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina) and Europe (Spain and Germany), and involves the area of Microbiology of the Program, in an institutional partnership with the Department of Forage Plant and Zootecnics Postgraduate program. The project is funded by the VI Framework Programme of the European Commission. Among the partnerships the one with the Technical University of Munich stands out and t is a re-release of Project Probal- Capes-DAAD, with a planning for study trips for teachers and students of Postgraduate Studies in Germany and Brazil.Among the exchanges for the realization of sandwich doctoral degree, the program has sent an average of 5-7 students each year with scholarships from CAPES and CNPq, with preference for American universities like the University of California - Davis, University of California - Riverside; Auburn University; . University of Florida in Gainesville and the State University of Iowa. In Europe, stands out, the exchange with the University of Corunna and the University of Seville, Spain ; the University of Munich and the University of Cologne in Germany and at the University of Bologna, Italy. In the last five years, it has increased the participation of teachers in post-doctoral internships.

Nucleation Activity

Besides the activities of significant regional impact on the economy, the program has trained most of the teachers working in soil  and environmental science in education institutions such as the UFSM, UFPel, UERGS, UNIPAMPA and Private Universities of the State. In research, the program has a large number of graduates working in the State Foundation for Agricultural Research (FEPAGRO), the Riograndense Rice Institute (IRGA) and Embrapa units located in Rio Grande do Sul.Regarding extension, some Masters and PhD graduates have been presidents and directors of the last EMATER management, an Extension Company of the State. Some graduates from the State Environmental Protection Foundation (FEPAM) of State have been trained in the course and the faculty of the program has aided this foundation to research and propose standards and legislation for environmental control and management in Rio Grande do Sul.
