Environmental effects on the interstellar medium of star-forming dwarf galaxies in the Virgo cluster — Marco Grossi (ON/MCTIC)
17 de maio de 2017: 12:30 - 13:30
The Herschel Virgo cluster survey (HeViCS) is a project aimed at studying the dust
properties of galaxies in the nearest rich cluster, to investigate how the coldest phases of
the interstellar medium are affected by a high-densoty environment.
I will review the main results of this survey focusing in particular on the Virgo star-forming dwarf
population. Herschel, millimetre and radio observations combined show that the interaction
with the cluster environment is stripping both dust and atomic hydrogen gas. On the other
hand, the molecular hydrogen component of Virgo dwarfs appears to be mostly intact at the
current stage of evolution within the cluster. I will discuss the implication of these results for the evolutionary scenarios of dwarf galaxies in high-density environments.
