Morfometryka: principles and applications — Fabricio Ferrari (FURG)

Morphology is a result of galaxy formation, evolution and interaction
with neighbors. The relationship between galaxy morphology and other
properties can help us infer how galaxies acquired the properties that
we observe today. The traditional method of classification based on
visual inspection of images by experts is deficient, for several
reasons: it is very subjective expert-dependent method; it does not
capture the morphological subtleties; it cannot be applied to large
datasets. Here we plan to use Morfometryka (Ferrari et al. 2015) – an
algorithm designed to measure structural parameters for an extended
morphometric  system (Concentration, Asymmetry, Smoothness, Gini, M20,
Spirality and Entropy) to investigate galaxy morphometry. A supervised
classification method can help to assign each new galaxy a probability
of being elliptical or spiral. In this way, we can investigate how the
morphometric parameters are related to other structural parameters of
galaxies and how they vary with redshift, providing us with clues
about how they formed and evolved.
