Over the past decade, deep infrared images have pushed the cosmic frontier back to just 500 million years after the Big Bang, delivering the first large sample of galaxies at redshifts 7<z<10.  Sometime in this redshift window the hydrogen in the intergalactic medium transitioned from mostly neutral to ionized.  The emergence of the first detailed spectra of z>7 galaxies have begun to sharpen our understanding of this reionization process while also providing a glimpse of the physical nature of early…

Characterizing the connection between the distribution and assembly history of galaxies and dark-matter halos is crucial to our understanding of galaxy formation, and to our ability to perform cosmological measurements from galaxy surveys. Investigating these relations requires the combination of multiple techniques, including N-body numerical simulations, clustering measurements, stellar population synthesis or weak gravitational lensing. Galaxy clusters are the most passive bound systems in the Universe. They have long been known to be dominated by dark matter. Their huge sizes suggest that the complex astrophysics of baryons, in particular gas dissipation and feedback from black holes and exploding stars, are relatively unimportant, so clusters are useful to test the predictions of the standard cosmological model.
