SUMMARY:Big Data\, Big Skies: The Era of the Nancy Grace Roman Telescope - Jen Sobeck (Caltech\, USA)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope\, the next NASA flagship mission set to launch by May 2027\, will revolutionize our understanding of the cosmos.  With a field of view 100 times greater than the Hubble Space Telescope at comparable resolution\, Roman will perform an unprecedented high-latitude survey to map the distribution of dark matter and measure the expansion history of the universe through weak lensing and galaxy clustering.  Simultaneously\, the Roman microlensing survey will conduct a census of exoplanets in the Milky Way Bulge\, identifying worlds ranging from the habitable zone to free floating planets. Roman will generate a staggering 1.4 terabytes of data every day\, sending down roughly 20 petabytes over its baseline five-year mission—a data volume that dwarfs previous space observatories.  This presentation will provide an overview of the Roman mission as well as discuss in detail one of its core component surveys\, the Galactic Bulge Time Domain Survey. \nLink YouTube: https://youtube.com/live/KkeekuahOQc

SUMMARY:Isotopic Abundances in Globular Clusters as Tests of Stellar Nucleosynthesis - Madeleine McKenzie (Carnegie Observatories)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nMagnesium isotope ratios provide a powerful probe of the origin of chemical anomalies in globular clusters. Although globular clusters were once thought to contain stars of a single chemical composition\, we now know that many host multiple stellar populations with distinct abundance patterns. These variations point to high-temperature nuclear processing in an earlier generation of stars\, but the nature of those stars and the enrichment mechanisms remain uncertain. In this talk\, I present a high-precision spectroscopic analysis of magnesium isotope ratios in globular cluster stars. We find that stars enriched in nitrogen\, sodium\, and aluminium also show enhanced ^26Mg/^24Mg\, but not ^25Mg/^24Mg\, revealing a surprising isotopic pattern that is difficult to reproduce in current models. We also find no clear isotopic difference between stars with and without enhancements in slow neutron-capture elements. Together\, these results provide new insight into the stellar sources and nuclear processes that shaped the chemistry of globular clusters. \nLink YouTube: https://youtube.com/live/oUGn_jNBD4U

SUMMARY:Detailed chemical composition of solar analogues with and without planets - Marilia Carlos (ON/MCTI)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nThe detailed chemical compositions of planet-hosting stars provide vital clues on the formation and composition of exoplanetary systems. A recent analysis by Pavlenko et al. (2019) suggests that planet-hosting stars tend to have larger C/O abundance ratios than stars without confirmed planets at given metallicity. This signature was solidified in Amarsi et al. (2019) via a three dimensional non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (3D NLTE) analysis of about 60 F- and G-dwarfs in the thin disk. Here\, I will present results from a detailed and extended reanalysis of the Amarsi et al. (2019) sample. We take advantage of high resolution and high S/N spectra from HARPS\, and correct to 1D and 3D NLTE where possible\, in order to determine Li\, Na\, Mg\, Al\, Si\, S\, Ca\, Sc\, Ti\, V\, Cr\, Mn\, Co\, Ni\, Cu and Zn abundances with high precision and accuracy. I will contrast the result for stars with and without confirmed planets\, and discuss the possible implications on our understanding of exoplanetary systems. \n  \nYouTube link: https://youtube.com/live/FkbK6IYE4c4

SUMMARY:WST: new frontiers for Spectroscopic Surveys - Vincenzo Mainieri (ESO\, Germany)
DESCRIPTION:The demand for a large telescope dedicated to spectroscopic surveys is an interest shared worldwide and figures explicitly in many national strategic science plans. The Wide Field Spectroscopic Telescope (WST) is a community lead initiative to fill this crucial gap in astronomical capability and will work in synergy with future ground and space-based facilities.  WST is designed as a 12m aperture telescope with simultaneous operation of a large field-of-view (3 sq. degree)\, high-multiplex (30\,000) multi-object spectrograph (MOS) and a giant 3×3 arcmin integral field spectrograph (IFS). I will present the status of the project\, including telescope and instrument design\, operational concept\, and sustainability impact.  I will describe the very wide range of science topics that WST will tackle as developed by a Science Team including more than 800 scientists. WST will address outstanding scientific questions in the areas of cosmology; galaxy assembly\, evolution\, and enrichment\, including our own Milky Way; the origin of stars and planets; and time domain and multi-messenger astrophysics . \n  \nYouTube Link: https://youtu.be/sf-zoF_dnG8 \n

SUMMARY:Gemini in the Time Domain Era - Elena Sabbi (Gemini\, Noirlab)
DESCRIPTION:With the full-scale operations of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory and the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope now underway\, astronomy has entered a golden age of time-domain discovery. As we move away from finding just a few rare transients\, the International Gemini Observatory serves as the essential bridge between discovery and characterization. This talk explores how Gemini’s “Agile” operations allow for rapid optical and near-infrared photometric spectroscopic follow-up of the most exotic events in the night sky. We will discuss the current instrument suite and the new software tools available to the community for rapid science access. Finally\, we will highlight how Gemini is evolving to be the “go-to” observatory for the era of multi-messenger astronomy. The talk concludes with a review of the “Once in a Rubin Gem”: a Director’s Discretionary Time initiative specifically designed for the rapid follow-up of LSST’s most mysterious unknown unknowns. \n  \nYouTube link: https://youtube.com/live/rqSwzzZ1-ps
