Egypt votes in referendum aimed at extending Sisi’s rule

After three days of voting, ended April 22 the referendum to extend the presidential term of Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. The president is in power since 2014, after a military coup that overthrew the islamic government of Mohamed Morsi. Sisi was formally elected in 2018 and his presidential term ends in 2022, but the parliament approved a constitutional reform in April 16 that extends his term to 2024 and permits reelection. Sisi could stay in power until 2030.
