President Ramaphosa welcomes Cuban doctors to South Africa

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has welcomed a team of Cuban medical experts to his country to aid in the fight against COVID-19. The 217 experts arrived in the African country on Monday at the request of President Ramaphosa. The presidency said the team of health professionals consists of epidemiologists, biostatisticians, public health experts, family physicians and healthcare technology engineers. South Africa is the continent’s worst affected country by COVID-19, having recorded 4,546 cases and 87 deaths, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

South Africa takes over as AU chair

The African Union (AU) has wrapped up its annual summit, with leaders pledging that the 55-member bloc will play a greater role in resolving protracted conflicts and work to unlock the continent’s economic potential. Tackling issues such as gender equality, climate change and boosting commerce through the creation of a new continental free trade area are also high on the AU agenda for 2020. Keeping with the summit theme of Silencing the Guns, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa spoke of an Africa “that is prosperous and at peace with itself” as he took over as AU chair from his Egyptian counterpart, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.

Julius Malema Calls for the Creation of “United States of Africa”

South African politician and leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Julius Malema has reiterated his call for a united Africa, one that breaks down all geographic barriers. He was speaking after being re-elected leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters, EFF, over the weekend. The EFF is South Africa’s third biggest party as per the last general elections. He added that the EFF was using the South African platform but its main aim was to achieve continental unity at the political level. “We want to lead Africa, we want a united state of Africa. With one currency, with one economy, with one parliament, with one president, with one judiciary”.
