South Africa shuts embassy in Nigeria after reprisal attacks

South Africa temporarily closed its embassy in Nigeria following violence against South African businesses in reprisal for attacks on foreign-owned stores in Johannesburg, while Nigeria announced plans to evacuate its nationals from South Africa. South African Foreign Affairs Minister Naledi Pandor said on Thursday the embassy was closed temporarily after threats led to fears for staff safety.

Nigerian growth slows amid declining oil output

The growth projection to the nigerian economy slowed down in face of the declining oil outputs. The situation is alarming because oil revenues represent more than 90% of nigerian foreign exchange. Muhammadu Buhari, reelected president, has promised to diversify the economy, however the results are not clear. After averaging more than 7% in the first 14 years of this century, annual growth in Nigeria’s economy, which vies with South Africa as the coninent’s largest, hasn’t manahed to top 3% for the past four years.

Nigerian police, Shi’ite group clash in capital, at least three dead

Nigerian police and Shi’ite Muslim protesters clashed in the capital Abuja on Monday, with at least one demonstrator, one journalist and a senior policeman killed, highlighting one of the security challenges faced by the country with Africa’s biggest economy. Police said a senior officer was killed and three other policemen were injured during the protest, and police had arrested 54 suspects who would be brought to court.
