{"id":4671,"date":"2024-09-19T08:47:31","date_gmt":"2024-09-19T11:47:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ufrgs.br\/cebrafrica\/?p=4671"},"modified":"2024-09-19T08:47:31","modified_gmt":"2024-09-19T11:47:31","slug":"exercito-dos-eua-sai-de-estado-africano","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ufrgs.br\/cebrafrica\/en\/2024\/09\/19\/exercito-dos-eua-sai-de-estado-africano\/","title":{"rendered":"US army exits African state"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"https:\/\/www.ufrgs.br\/cebrafrica\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/66e94deb20302737660b2bd5.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ufrgs.br\/cebrafrica\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/66e94deb20302737660b2bd5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Via: RT<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe US has concluded the withdrawal of its forces and assets from Niger, months after the military rulers of the Sahel country demanded their departure.<\/p>\n<p>In a joint statement on Monday, the Pentagon and the Nigerien defense ministry said the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) Coordination Element, which included a two-star general officer and staff, has also left Niger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis process began on May 19 following the mutual establishment of withdrawal conditions and continued with the withdrawal of US forces and assets from Air Base 101 in Niamey on July 7\u2026 and Air Base 201 in Agadez on August 5,\u201d the parties stated.<\/p>\n<p>The Pentagon had some 1,000 troops stationed in Niger, where it had built a $100 million military base in 2016 and relied on the landlocked state as a crucial location for its counter-terrorism operations in the Sahel region.<\/p>\n<p>In March, the new government, which took power after ousting pro-Western President Mohamed Bazoum in 2023, terminated the defense agreement which, for over a decade, had allowed American soldiers and civilian contractors to operate there.
