The water sources contamination by natural and anthropogenic substances puts in alert the capacity to maintain the balance of these ecosystems with the preservation of their functions, maintenance of aquatic life and the quality of noble uses, such as the abstraction of drinking water. In water, some compounds including genotoxic compounds, are generated by adsorption on the suspended particulate matter and deposited over time in the sediment. Evidence of contamination in the sediments of the Taquari River (low Taquari subbasin) in drinking water abstraction areas has raised concerns about the water quality and sediment of this source. The objective of this project is to analyze the presence of contaminants in potable water collection sites, defining the sources and the toxic and genotoxic effects of these stressors as a parameter of quality for the ecosystem. Sensitive methods will be performed to detect the presence of toxic substances on DNA, including Salmonella\/microsome testing, micronuclei in human lymphocytes and zebra-fish embryos test. These methods may contribute to the adoption of early actions to control the environmental quality of the state watersheds.<\/p>\n
