Come and learn a bit about what we’re up to this Thursday, the 4th, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Professor Vinícius Brei will be leading the seminar and presenting on his research titled “On marketing science reproducibility: historical assessment and index proposition“. The meeting will be held in a hybrid format. Join us! Below is a brief description of the seminar:

Any science aims to describe, explain, and predict phenomena. When these explanations are difficult or impossible to reproduce, the reputation and body of knowledge of that science may become questionable. This phenomenon is known as the replication crisis. This research addresses the replication crisis in the field of marketing, which has received little attention compared to other scientific fields. This work analyzes this problem and offers two contributions. First, it creates a Replication Index (RI) scale and applies it to grade the 400 most-cited empirical, frequentist papers in marketing history published in the four premier marketing journals. After grading each article and journal, the research shows that the overall RI score for marketing science was only 2.04 on a 0-10 point scale. On average, the papers published in Marketing Science achieved the highest RI, while the least reproducible were published in the Journal of Consumer Research. The second contribution is an analysis of how misusing and misinterpreting p-values and other frequentist statistics concepts have undermined marketing science’s reproducibility. As a result, the research makes recommendations to strengthen marketing science’s contributions, including the growing use of Bayesian statistics.

Meeting Link: https://mit.zoom.us/j/92825888029

This week, we will kick off with the research seminar rounds of our group members.
