Academic studies examining the educational contributions of his work already number in the dozens. His lyrics bring classrooms closer to the reality lived by millions of black youths — who face racism, exclusion, and lack of opportunity. What does this recognition, coming both from a public university and from Black student activism, mean for your personal trajectory and for hip-hop in Brazil?
“Your remark is very important. Receiving this title is a double honor. First, because of everything that receiving a Doctor Honoris Causa title represents. That alone already feels like a dream. But it becomes even more meaningful since it emerged from the mobilization of Black student collectives, a community that is meaningful to me. Everything gains greater beauty and significance. Throughout my life, I’ve tried to contribute to this network of solidarities that we also call anti-racism. Racism anywhere in the world is self-destructive, but in Brazil, it’s doubly so. It’s impossible to deny another person without, in some way, denying yourself. These young people, who come from backgrounds similar to mine and who have been occupying and fighting for public universities, are committed, just like us, to moving beyond theory.

Taking part in hip-hop culture means I see myself as part of a larger collective soul capable of inspiring gestures like this one, gestures powerful enough to provoke urgent and transformative reflections. It is more than hip-hoppy, which has gone far beyond at this point: it’s a way of life, a way of seeing and existing in the world. It should not only exist within academia but also inspire and influence universities through its sense of love, justice, and collectivity. When that happens, we achieve a genuine victory. Point for the Black community of Rio Grande do Sul, so often made invisible yet always active in major national debates. Oliveira Silveira came from here. So did my friend Rafa Rafuagi from the Hip-Hop Museum. These are incredibly valuable people, not just for the state where they were born. We are fruits of the same Baobab tree, and it is an honor to join my brothers and sisters from the south beneath the shade of the tree to receive an Honoris Causa title.

Emicida highlighted the importance of the South and its artists in the text he recorded in the Golden Book of UFRGS (Photo: Flávio Dutra/JU Archive – 11/ 29/ 2025)

Your work inspires young Black people from the urban outskirts who enter universities and contributes to the implementation of Brazil’s Law 10.639/03, which mandates the teaching of Afro-Brazilian history and culture. We need to understand the historical importance of simple everyday gestures, which, in truth, are not simple at all.

Bringing an MC’s lyrics into the classroom to explore the richness of language, or using graffiti to encourage students to reflect on how we relate to public spaces, or discussing collectivity through experiences grounded in hip-hop culture — all of that is extremely powerful.

Law 10.639 is an enormous and undeniable achievement. Our generation now has the opportunity to strengthen it, preserving its gains while improving what it still lacks so that we may build a different relationship with ourselves and with our sibling continent across the Atlantic: Africa, which is inseparable from any discussion about Brazil. At the same time, we must never lose sight of Indigenous knowledge and Indigenous life, which are far from secondary in the country we dream of building. Imagining a such Brazil means believing in education — and truly believing in education is everything we can do.

Projects like AmarElo seek to retell Brazilian history from an Afro-Brazilian perspective while honoring figures such as Lélia Gonzalez. To paraphrase the great Mário Quintana—a good cause does not save a bad poet.

Art can serve many purposes beyond itself, but its only true obligation is to exist as art.
