The alarming influence of human activities on the environment is in many ways of utmost concern in society. In the southern Brazilian biome Pampa (a grassland biome), this situation takes a dramatic twist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tuco-tuco-do-lami<\/em> (Ctenomys lami<\/em>), a small subterranean rodent endemic to the city of Porto Alegre, is classified as vulnerable to extinction by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio). The animal is endangered because of its extremely restricted distribution and the intense modification that the landscape where the tuco-tuco<\/em> is present has undergone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Propelled by curiosity about the species and its relationship to environmental impacts, the research conducted by biologist Thamara Santos de Almeida revisited 28 areas historically occupied by the tuco-tuco-do-lami<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The findings were worrying: only eight subpopulations persist, while 15 have disappeared in the last decades. In the other areas, the researchers were unable to confirm the animal\u2019s current presence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe farther away these native grasslands are from one another, the higher the chance that it [tuco-tuco-do-lami<\/em>] will not be able to survive\u201d<\/p>\nThamara Santos de Almeida<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

She explains that, \u201cMore significant than the total number of native grasslands, the connectivity between such fragments of land is the true and only cause for the survival of the tuco-tuco-do-lami<\/em>. This means that the conservation strategies need to prioritize the restoration and management of green corridors<\/a> that connect the remaining populations\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n

The engineer of the soil<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

 Described by scientists in only 2001, the tuco-tuco-do-lami<\/em> is a subterranean rodent that digs galleries and tunnels, making the characteristic sound that gave it its popular name. When it digs through the soil, the rodent moves the earth around and disperses seeds of plants of the grass family, taking on an important ecological role in the dynamics of the native grasslands. Although similar, the tuco-tuco<\/em> has no relation to urban rats: these small rodents are field animals that bring no harm to humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This species of rodent lives only in sandy fields in the municipalities of Porto Alegre, Viam\u00e3o and Santo Ant\u00f4nio da Patrulha. Its low dispersal ability, as well as its strong dependency on fields, makes it highly vulnerable to any alteration in the use of the soil. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUltimately, this means the species has a higher chance of becoming endangered. Given that it lives in small areas, any impact increases the risk of extinction\u201d<\/p>\nThamara Santos de Almeida<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Growing threats<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

The main obstacles to the survival of the species are related to agricultural expansion (especially soy and forestry), urbanization, road construction and large infrastructure projects. The loosening of environmental licensing regulations<\/a> is also a concern. \u201cWith the inexistence of previous studies identifying areas of the animal\u2019s occupation, we risk eliminating whole populations for an undertaking that could have been planned somewhere else\u201d, warns the researcher. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 The species already faces an acute outlook: the territory it occupies has been reduced by 17%, and currently less than half of the potential habitat in this territory remains available. Furthermore, according to the study, between 1985 and 2019, the biome Pampa lost 21% of its native vegetation; only 45% of its natural land coverage remains. More recent data from MapBiomas \u2014 a Brazilian collaborative network of Non-Governmental Organizations, universities and technology companies which analyzes data concerning biomes and cross-cutting themes \u2014 indicate that, in the course of four decades, the Gaucho Pampa lost nearly 7.5 million acres, the equivalent of about 30% of its original territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recommendations for preservation<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

To face this situation, Almeida\u2019s study proposes measures such as the creation and enlargement of Conservation Units, the restoration of grasslands and the reinforcement of the connectivity between vegetation fragments. Almeida defends that \u201cThe Pampa is still an invisible biome<\/a> for public policy, but its biodiversity can no longer be ignored.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although it focuses on the tuco-tuco-do-lami<\/em>, her work also calls attention to the unique biodiversity found in the Pampa. It is considered one of the richest in Brazil in number of species by area. Protecting this little rodent means taking on the responsibility of preserving an entire biome, with riches still rather unknown, but essential to the environmental balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scientific importance<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

As the first pioneer study on the species, last month, the journal Mammalia<\/a>, from De Gruyter Brill \u2014 an international, multidisciplinary, bimonthly publication dedicated to the inventory, analysis, and interpretation of mammalian diversity \u2014, published Almeida\u2019s study in its latest edition. The researcher understands this to have a positive effect on the diffusion of information. She also highlights the role of media outlets as agents for environmental preservation, promoting education on the species and measures to protect the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
