Now, almost two years later, the Guide has been finally concluded, with the collaboration of Aline Richter, Cristiano Agra Iserhard (Department of Ecology, Zoology and Genetics at UFPel) and Leandro Duarte.

The Pampa, a biome that influences and guides the culture and the imaginary of the people of three nations (Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina) in the almost forgotten Southernmost region of South America, is home of a complex biodiversity. Both its ecological and evolutionary origin is intertwined with the human history, from natives to European colonizers. This complexity makes the Pampa a biological and cultural unit at the same time: actually, conceiving one of those facets without considering the other does not make sense at all. Learning about the biodiversity of the Pampa biome is necessary to minimize the intense exploration it has been suffering over the last decades, caused both by the lack of knowledge and negligence of conservation efforts, when compared to other Brazilian biomes. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to present the Pampa to those who inhabit it, just like a mirror. That is paramount, as without the Pampa’s natural features, people won’t be able to call it home anymore.

Over the last decades, various studies about the biodiversity of different groups that inhabit the Pampa region have been published. However, the diversity of butterflies remains not appropriately known by scientists, and less yet by the public. This Guide represent the first step in this direction. This material is not a definitive version, as the findings about biodiversity are as dynamic as itself. However, we hope that this Guide of Butterflies from the Pampa encourages people to meet this amazing diversity
and that it serves as a stimulus for more actions like this one to be made. Lastly, we hope this Guide may be handled by the people of the Pampa, and perhaps it can stimulate them to look more carefully at this special and charismatic group of insects.

Leandro Duarte (Ecology Department/UFRGS)
Cristiano Iserhard (Ecology, Zoology and Genetics Department/UFPel)

To download our e-book version of the “Illustrative guide to fruit-feeding butterflies of Pampa biome”, just go below:

Guia-Ilustrativo-de-Borboletas-Frugivoras-do-Pampa-Gaucho-Versao-FinalDownload

This project was developed by our undergraduated student Bianca Machado during her first year in the lab.
