His research interests include language teacher education, (critical) English for specific/academic purposes, and relations of power in global academic knowledge production. His current research projects include investigations into i) the long-term impact of research writing interventions; ii) the political economy of post-secondary language teaching; iii) the impact of various pedagogical interventions on plurilingual EAL students’ learning outcomes; iv) faculty “editing” processes, practices, and ideologies; and v) EAP teachers’ pedagogies for supporting diverse students’ academic literacies.

Academic Knowledge Production in the 21st Century: A Plurilingual Approach

One needs only peruse recent applied linguistics research articles (e.g., Amano et al., 2023), special issues (e.g., Lillis & Curry, 2022), and books (e.g., Avila Reyes, 2022) to understand the importance of scholarly writing for publication to global scholars in the modern “knowledge economy.” In short, although there is much scientific research and related writing happening in other languages, the global trends point to a) increased expectations for academic research production; b) the privileging of research articles as the dominant form of knowledge exchange; and c) English as a global lingua franca for such exchange. Supercharged by the worldwide expansion of English, global neoliberal educational policies, and the facility of a common language of scientific knowledge, the implications of these trends are widely discussed in the field of applied linguistics and in one of its newer sub-disciplines, English for research publication purposes (ERPP). In this presentation, I situate, explain, and reflect upon a relatively novel plurilingual approach to language for specific purposes. At the outset, I situate this work within the emerging field of ERPP, a sub-discipline of applied linguistics. I then provide the theoretical and empirical underpinnings of such an approach, highlighting how it draws upon both post-structuralist and emancipatory epistemologies of language, knowledge, identity, and power. Next, I outline the main pedagogical pillars of such an approach, sketching a roadmap for how it may be taken up in context-specific and lingua-culturally responsive ways (e.g., in Brazil). To conclude, I advocate for an ethical applied linguistics approach that not only unabashedly challenges asymmetrical relations of power, but also exercises critical reflexivity and humility with respect to its limitations.

Palestra: Academic Knowledge Production in the 21st Century: A Plurilingual Approach Palestrante: James
