On the one hand, memory has been transformed into an obligation, fostering situations of abuse, tyranny, and saturation; on the other, the passage of time appears to have stagnated, reducing the present to a series of fleeting moments. In this context, there is a discrepancy in memory discourses and representations regarding their ideological and political dimensions: while memories and victims of communist regimes are acknowledged, those of capitalism remain unrecognized. This dossier proposal stems from the collective research project “Memories of Capitalism”, initiated in 2023 at the Laboratory for Studies on Political Uses of the Past (Luppa). The project is organized into five thematic axes: 1) Capitalism, Its Memory and Temporality; 2) Memories of Modern and Contemporary Slavery; 3) Memories of Colonialism and Imperialism; 4) Neoliberalism, the Capitalocene, and Their Victims; and 5) Capitalism and Its Monumentalization. The objectives are twofold: a) To theorize the conditions under which memories of capitalism are produced and its victims are named, drawing on an expanded understanding of capitalism as a rationality that has imposed its norms on all dimensions of life, thereby transforming our relationship with the past and time; b) Through case studies, to document and validate memories of capitalism across its history, accounting for the specificities of memory-making processes in each historical period.

Tempo Journal, Universidade Federal Fluminense, Brasil Editors: Caroline Silveira BauerUniversidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS)Laboratório de Estudos sobre os Usos Políticos do Passado (Luppa)CV: http://lattes.cnpq.br/4294130068781971 Celeste Muñoz MartinezUniversidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED) European Observatory on Memories (EUROM)CV: https://portalcientifico.uned.es/investigadores/205130/detalle Submissions are accepted in Spanish, French, English, and Portuguese.
