A cidade de Ametista do Sul concentra a grande maioria dos quase 400 garimpos de ametista existentes no Rio Grande do Sul. Aqui sua praça central, com a pirâmide e o prédio da exposição Expopedras, programada para ocorrer novamente no final de março de 2004.
