Yellow September Campaign
In this month, the suicide prevention campaign is held around the world, Yellow September. Despite being a subject of concern for a long time, in 2017 it gained greater visibility due to the 13 Reasons Why series and the game Baleia Azul. Both warned about the importance of talking about mental disorders and taking action to protect people in our community, especially young people.
According to WHO, almost 100% of suicides are related to mental disorders. Therefore, they are potentially preventable. Meanwhile, we still don't know how to deal well with mental health issues. There is still a lot of prejudice involved and people are ashamed to speak up when they are not feeling well and to ask for help. Or even when someone doesn't seem to be doing well, they often don't know how to help.
The Yellow September is a campaign that comes to change that. It proposes that our society change the way of communicating about mental disorders, and about seeking help when you are not feeling well. Warns that there is no room for prejudice against mental disorders. No one is exempt from having a mental disorder at some point in their lives.
The Yellow September campaign is growing every year in Brazil, and in 2016, Santa Catarina had one of the biggest participations. Physicians from the Santa Catarina Association of Psychiatry participated in campaign events in 28 cities in SC. For this year, various types of activities are being organized, such as walks to value life, lectures open to the community, lighting of buildings and tourist attractions with the color yellow during the month of September and workshops for health professionals across the country. .
