Don't even think about killing us
Despite the legislation that condemns femicide, data on violence against women is still alarming. In the first half of 2020, when social isolation became fundamental in the fight against covid-19, the deaths of 648 Brazilian women were recorded, mostly black women in a situation of social vulnerability.
In this context, the Levante Feminista contra o Femicide launched the campaign “Nem Pensa em Me Matar” on March 25th, with the theme: “Whoever kills a woman kills humanity!”. The uprising brings together more than 200 women from different backgrounds, including black, indigenous, quilombola, riverside, water, forest, anti-prohibitionist, parliamentary and LBTQIA+ movements.
The initiative aims to denounce the culture of hatred against women, as well as the neglect of the State in the face of the increase in occurrences. Among her actions on social media is the undersigned against femicide, which already has almost 40,000 signatures. Furthermore, the organizers are planning specific actions in different Brazilian regions, according to the experiences and problems presented in each one. With the hashtag #NemPenseEmMeMatar and the image of sunflowers, which symbolize hope, the aim is to raise awareness of the issue and show that violence against women harms not only families, but society as a whole.
