Considering plants are immobile beings, the resistance to stressful conditions is a must along their life cycle. However, adaptation is a process that is only possible with genetic diversity, a characteristic that is, by times, left on the sidelines of research. There are a plethora of mechanisms that may contribute to genetic diversity, among the less studied ones: transposable elements (TE, a.k.a junk DNA), and host-microbiome interactions. These same mechanisms are, to an extent, the ecosystem’s influence on the individual, and have been linked to important biological processes in some plant species, revealing that evolution is less and less an individual process, and more of a communal development. Myrtaceae, one of the most diverse woody tree family in plants, is represented by many economically important species, such as Eucaliptus grandis, Eugenia uniflora, Psidium guajava and Syzygium aromaticum. These species are sought after for their wood, essential oils, spices and fleshy fruits. Furthermore, their adaptation capabilities to ecologically stressful conditions is a key factor in their biotechnological application. Both Corymbia citriodora and E. uniflora are known for their tolerance to arid regions, characterized by drought, poor soil quality, salinity and high amounts of insolation. The latter is native to Brazil and has been classified as an invasive species in a world-wide fashion, exemplifying its resistance and adaptability. As such, in our work we seek to understand some of the possible adaptation mechanisms that contribute to these contrasting distribution areas, and how they contribute to the diversification of these plants. By focusing on transposable TEs, we have characterized the amount of repeated genomic regions in Myrtaceae, with variations over three-fold. Of these repeated sequences, the ones that contribute the most to genomic variation are of the retrotransposon class of TEs: Gypsy and Copia. Among these two super-families, nearly every lineage was correlated with an increase in genome size, but when calculating lineage insertion times and clade distributions, it becomes clear their contributions are more complex (varying among taxa and time windows). We also detected an horizontal TE transfer (HTT) event among Myrtaceae, with a probable transference from Syzygium oleosum to Rhodamnia argentea, an indication of how species may influence each other’s evolutionary dynamics. Lastly, by investigating biological processes influenced by TEs, we recovered many mechanisms already reported as pivotal in Myrtaceae adaptation.
