Abstract:

Congenital anomalies (CA) are among the leading causes of infant morbidity and mortality, accounting for approximately 240,000 newborn deaths worldwide each year. In Brazil, they represent the second leading cause of infant mortality. The Live Birth Information System (Sinasc) is the main national database for recording these conditions at birth; however, it presents limitations related to underreporting and incomplete data. In the northwestern region of Paraná, numerous live births (LB) are recorded with unclassified or missing CA data, while congenital anomalies are identified as causes of death, revealing weaknesses in surveillance and reporting systems. Accordingly, this study aims to assess the prevalence and spatial patterns of CA in the northwestern region of Paraná, based on Sinasc records from 2010 to 2024 (retrospective analysis) and from 2025 to 2027 (prospective surveillance). The project was approved by the Research Ethics Committees of the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA) and the State University of Maringá (UEM). This is an observational study conducted in two phases. The retrospective phase will analyze secondary data from Sinasc and the Mortality Information System (SIM), while the prospective phase will implement active surveillance in selected maternity hospitals through maternal questionnaires, collection of risk factor data, and photographic documentation of anomalies with informed consent. Clinically and epidemiologically relevant CA will be prioritized, following the recommendations of the Brazilian Ministry of Health. Analyses will include prevalence estimates, detection of temporal variations, spatial mapping of cases, and probabilistic linkage between Sinasc and SIM databases. The Global Birth Defects (GBDDC) application will be used as a tool to support data collection and professional training. In this context, the retrospective phase has already begun, including an evaluation of the impact of CA on infant mortality between 2010 and 2019 in one health region of northwestern Paraná through data linkage between birth and death records. After linkage, congenital heart defects, initially ranked seventh, became the second most prevalent CA. The infant mortality rate due to CA in the region (30.7/10,000 LB) exceeded the national average (28.0/10,000 LB), underscoring the importance of multiple sources to strengthen epidemiological surveillance. It is expected that this project will establish a regional baseline for priority CAs, improve data quality and early detection, strengthen the capacity of health teams, and identify spatial and environmental risk patterns, thereby contributing to the reduction of infant mortality due to congenital anomalies.

SEMINÁRIO DE QUALIFICAÇÃO (Doutorado) NITZA FERREIRA MUNIZ Vigilância e atenção em anomalias congênitas na região noroeste do Paraná (Surveillance of congenital anomalies in the northwestern region of Paraná State, […]

[108

post-17020","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-seminarios-e-defesas
["GET
