Resumo<\/strong>: Information Technology has allowed vertically related firms to share sales forecasts, production schedules, inventory, etc. This fact motivated many studies on how the retailer’s superior knowledge of market conditions affects pricing and competition within different vertical restraints. But this literature lacks studies understanding how vertical restraints are affected by information flows from manufacturer to retailer. We fill this gap by tracing the effects of information asymmetries in vertical chains, in a setting where upstream firms have private information. We identify an information transmission effect that creates significant distortions in pricing decisions in a common agency. The distortions vary with the vertical restraint instrument available. With fixed-fee contracts, a double marginalization problem arises, resulting in higher than collusive prices. With Resale price maintenance, on the other hand, the information transmission interacts with contractual externalities generating more horizontal competition than under exclusive dealing. According to the vertical instrument available, the results indicate that the manufacturers’ private information enhances or decreases competition.
