  • Research interests: Our research focus on assessing effects of linear infrastructures on wildlife. Specifically, we are interested in identifying and predicting patterns of composition, magnitude and spatial and temporal distribution of fauna mortality in linear infrastructures and their effects on populations. An expectation we have for future studies is to expand this approach to other impacts of these infrastructures such as habitat loss and degradation. Application and development of new sampling and analytical approaches as well as the evaluation of the environmental licensing of these infrastructures are also within our interest.

  • Research interests:  My research aims to develop and implement analytical procedures for the evaluation of the effects of environmental and historical components on the distribution of the ecological diversity at multiple scales. I have been developing studies covering the following topics: phylogenetic gradient analysis in communities and metacommunities, trait-based community organization, phylobetadiversity, historical and ecological biogeography.

  • Research interests:  At BiMa-Lab, Bird and Mammal Evolution, Systematics and Ecology Lab, we study several aspects of vertebrate evolution, systematics, ecology and conservation. Currently, our projects focus on factors affecting patterns of diversity in ecosystems, assemblages, populations and species traits, and the scales of approach go from local to global. Most of our work is applied to ecosystem and animal conservation and management, always keeping in mind the human dimensions of wildlife, under a logic of sustainable development. BiMaLab connects people from many institutions working on several projects focusing the processes and patterns of vertebrate diversity and assembly rules. Most of us study mammals, birds, or both, but we are welcoming new researchers working on other organisms. Most are based in Porto Alegre, Brazil, but we are basically a network of people from many places with a passion for the study of evolutionary and ecological patterns and nature conservation. We are proud to be an example of nationality and gender equality in research.

  • Research interests: We focus on biological community ecology, with two main thematic axes, the search for species and functional group distribution and abundance patterns in time and space, along with the construction of ecological interaction networks (food webs, mutualistic, etc). Research questions deal with observational or experimental evaluations of: 1) conservation status for native and altered environments; 2) effects of ecological management (grazing, fire, etc) on the biota and its interactions; and 3) effectiveness of ecological restoration for impacted environments. Systems usually employed are invertebrates and plants, specifically interactions among insects, spiders and vegetation. A recent parallel line of research involves the integration between ecology and astrobiology, forming a consistent and multidisciplinar astroecology. The aims are recognising the importance of ecology to understand life on Earth and elsewhere, and the search for points in common between theoretical ecology and astrobiological processes, as for example proposing the concept of metabiospheres.
