Selection Modalities for Foreign Applicants
Selection by Vacancy Notice – Also Open for Brazilian Applicants
Annually, the Program releases a notice with all the information for those interested in attending the master’s and doctorate degree programs. The notice is usually released in the months of January and February for the admission in August of each year. This modality is not the best option for foreigners, because the selection of this notice gives no automatic right to the scholarship. After enrolling in the program, the student must compete with the Brazilian students for the scholarships provided by the Program. In addition, the applicant must be in Porto Alegre in person for the written test (in Portuguese), which is only the first part of the selection process. See the latest notice clicking here.
This is a notice specific to Americans (mainly Latin Americans), promoted by the Organization of American States (OAS). The whole process is carried out by OAS. Those interested can access the website http://www.oas.org/es/becas. In the menu “Study Opportunities” of the website, see the link “Brazil Scholarships.” By clicking on this link, those interested will have access to the last notice (summons). If the applicants want to prepare for the next selection, the link itself has items such as “frequently asked questions,” “common mistakes,” “checklist,” and “About Brazil,” in addition to the contacts of OAS for other questions. The selection in this notice ensures the scholarship. The applicant does not need to make prior contact with our Program. The vacancies will be on the notice of OAS.
PEC-PG CAPES Notice
CAPES is a Brazilian federal public foundation that gives scholarships to foreigners. There is an annual notice released by CAPES. To apply for it, the applicant must have a previously agreed letter of acceptance of the Program. To obtain the letter in our Program, the foreign applicant must contact one of the possible advisors on the list of professors who have vacancies. As this contact may take a while, we recommend students to contact them at least 60 days before the deadline for registration. One usually has to contact more than one professor to be accepted. The list of professors eligible to receive foreign students in our Program is disclosed here each year. The applicants must send their research project directly to their professor and, once accepted, the Department issues the letter of acceptance. For more information, see the CAPES website in www.capes.gov.br.
