POST-DOC POSITION IN BRAZIL FOR HIGH-PRESSURE EXPERIMENTAL PETROLOGY

The Laboratório de Geoquímica e Petrologia Experimental (LAGEPE) at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Brazil, seeks for a postdoctoral researcher that will be supported from March, 2020 till 13th September 2021, pending satisfactory progress during the first year. Both Brazilian and international candidates are more than welcome to apply. The fellowship covers an annual stipend of R$88,440.00 a year, which is an amazing salary for Brazilian patterns, which is more than seven times the Brazilian basic salary.

 

We are looking for exceptional candidates with a Ph.D in Earth Science or an equivalent degree in Natural Sciences (Physics, Chemistry), a strong background and interest in high-pressure experimental petrology (especially multi-anvil), mineral physics, geochemistry, and igneous petrology, and experience with LA-ICP-MS analytical method. We expect the candidates to be proficient in written and spoken English. Portuguese is not mandatory, but living in Brazil will require at least the basic level.

(2) A brief synopsis of the applicant’s Ph.D thesis (one page).

(3) Three reference letters.

 

Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) is located in Porto Alegre, and is a public university with one of the best ranks in education of all Brazil. LAGEPE is a well-equipped high-pressure laboratory with: a) a 1100ton press Walker Type Multi-Anvil; b) a 1000 ton press Toroidal Chamber Type; c) Diamond Anvil Cell; d) Parr Hydrothermal Reactor (5000 PSI);  e) ICP and Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometers; f) Raman Spectroscopy and other facilities.

 

Porto Alegre is the capital of the southernmost state in Brazil. It is an attractive city in terms of culture, the low-middle costs for living, the parks and tree lined streets. Porto Alegre is only 150km to the Atlantic Ocean, and it is surrounded by Uruguay and Argentina. The city also has an international airport which facilitates foreigners for traveling.
