The program, created in 1968 by a group of professors-researchers from the then School of Geology, was recognized in 1969 by CNPq as “Center of Excellence” in Geosciences and accredited by the Federal Council of Education in 1972 for Master’s and Doctorate.

This level of excellence, expressed by the CAPES maximum concept (Note 7) in the last four evaluations (2001, 2004, 2007, 2010 and 2013), was built by its teachers, with the qualified participation of its students and essential support of administrative technicians . The intense collaboration of PETROBRAS, the Geological Survey of Brazil (CPRM) and the National Petroleum Agency (ANP) has been fundamental, as well as the association with several educational institutions in the country and abroad. The international insertion takes place intensively with universities of several countries, like France, Germany, England, the United States of America, Canada, Australia, China, Cuba, Colombia, Argentina, Uruguay and Chile.
