The Program was created in 1968, by a group of research-professors from former School of Geology, was recognized in 1969, by CNPq, as a “Center of Excellence” in Geosciences, and it was credited by Brazilian Federal Board of Education in 1972, for both Master’s and Doctoral degrees.

This excellency level, expressed by CAPES’ maximum concept (note 7) in its last five evaluations (2001, 2004, 2007, 2010 and 2013), was built by its teachers, with the qualified participation of its students and the essential support of its administrative technicians. The intense collaboration of Petrobras, the Geological Survey of Brazil (CPRM) and the National Petroleum Agency (ANP), and the association with various educational institutions in Brazil and abroad, has been fundamental, as well. The international insertion occurs intensely with universities from several countries, such as France, Germany, England, the United States, Canada, Australia, China, Cuba, Colombia, Argentina, Uruguay and Chile.
