The Graduate Program in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, UFRGS) was officially accredited in 2000 by CAPES, the federal agency overseeing the quality of higher education in Brazil, to provide master’s and PhD training<\/span>[1] <\/span>. At that time, the Department of Psychiatry and Legal Medicine at the UFRGS School of Medicine and the Psychiatry Service at the Clinics Hospital (Hospital de Cl\u00ednicas de Porto Alegre, HCPA) were extending their focus beyond patient care training to include master’s and PhD-level academic research training. With this, the program responded to a growing demand for physician researchers prepared to take academic positions in Brazil.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The first class was enrolled in March 2000.\u00a0 Since then, the Program has grown in numbers<\/span>[1] <\/span>\u00a0and quality, reaching the<\/span> highest possible ranking among graduate programs in Brazil, moving from CAPES level 5 in the first triennial assessment (2000-2003) to CAPES level 7 (highest possible) already in the second triennial assessment (2007-2009), a quality level it has maintained until the most recent assessment performed in 2022<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>

CAPES assessments are performed by a group of independent consultants to ensure continued commitment of the graduate programs to their mission of preparing human resources for academic teaching and research and for\u00a0 generating knowledge and innovation\u00a0<\/p>

The Program has articulated its strategic planning with that of the larger Institution. The Institutional Development Plan at UFRGS states three major goals: 1) to increase the number of graduate programs, 2) to increase the number of graduate students in training, and 3) to increase the number of students with advanced degrees awarded by UFRGS. To those ends, the University provides resources, strategies, and tools. A Graduate Program Strategic Plan was first developed in 2019 to cover the period until 2024 in connection with the UFRGS Institutional Development Plan. Planned actions focus on preparing qualified professionals and promoting entry into\u00a0 higher education, academic and professional environments.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\u00a0In 2019, the Graduate Program in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences actively participated in the implementation of the Strategic Guidelines to be followed by all graduate programs associated with the UFRGS School of Medicine aiming to enhance the quality of graduate training. Among the strategies adopted, the Program chose a multidisciplinary path, welcoming professionals from diverse fields. In 2017, more than half of the students accepted in the Program (64.5%) had a degree in Medicine;\u00a0 after that, an increasing number of professionals from other fields, such as Psychology, Biomedicine, Nursing, Physical Education, Biology, Speech Therapy, Journalism, and Statistics joined the Program, adding diversity and interdisciplinarity. Research areas were then reorganized to encompass basic sciences, genetics, biological markers, neuroimaging, and several aspects of behavioral and mental disorders while maintaining coherence with the Institutional Development Plan. Other areas of emphasis were established, such as clinical psychiatry, epidemiology, pharmacological and psychosocial interventions, prevention and implementation[1]\u00a0 science. These disciplines are currently distributed along two major axes: Psychiatry and Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences.<\/span><\/p>

Psychiatry and Mental Health covers mental health assessment and outcome indicators; psychiatric epidemiology; neurobiology of mental illness; clinical psychopharmacology and other biological treatments; clinical psychiatry and psychopathology; and child and adolescent psychiatry. Behavioral Sciences covers psychoactive substance use disorders and other addictive behaviors; brain, behavior, and emotions; genetics; neuroimaging; and psychotherapy and other psychosocial interventions.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
