The objective of the doctorate program is to train scientists in mechanical engineering. During the four years program the students are trained to conduct innovative research in an autonomous way that can produce advances in the scientific knowledge of the area. Collaborative research with scientists from other national and foreign institutions is strongly encouraged. As a result, the students publish their discoveries in the most important scientific journals and in international conferences. Those who choose the academic career work as professors or researchers at educational and research institutions. During the four years of studies, the students will take 36 credits in disciplines. The credits taken in disciplines of the master\u2019s degree can be validated. At the end of the second year each student will take a qualification exam, in which the advance of the research is evaluated by a committee. The student must demonstrate proficiency in English and in another foreign language. At the end of the course the student must write a PhD Thesis and present it to an evaluation committee. In order to obtain the PhD degree, the student must demonstrate his\/her capacity to transform the research into scientific articles that can be published in scientific journals with high impact factor. In order to do so they must present a research project proposal describing the research topic for their PhD Thesis and showing the relevance and novelty of that research. The selection process is opened each year detailing the requisites that the candidates must address to be admitted into the program and the steps for the registration. Foreign students can reach to the administration in order to get assistant with this process through the e-mail<\/a>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Are eligible to the PhD Fellowships the regularly enrolled PhD students with exclusive dedication to the graduate program and without a working contract. The PhD fellowships have a duration of 48 months. The rules for selection among possible candidates are available at the websites of the two principal funding agencies CAPES (Portaria 34\/06<\/a>) and CNPq (RN 017\/06<\/a>).<\/p>\n The admission process and fellowship selection process are different processes. In order to apply for the fellowship selection process the student must manifest its interest by submitting the corresponding application form before the selection process, or during his\/her PhD studies by submitting a letter to the fellowships commission. The fellowships are distributed in accordance to the students performance measured through his\/her degrees at the disciplines and scientific publications. In order to obtain points for a publication it is necessary to submit a form available to this purpose.
