Call for papers
The tragedy experienced by the state of Rio Grande do Sul and the city of Porto Alegre has put architecture and urbanism back on the front line as essential tools for human habitation in full terms, giving pragmatic ingenuity back a leading role that semantic concerns had been robbing it of. Nothing provincial, our Docomomo welcomes stories not only from our Southern Cone, but from the entire Global South, with an emphasis on the achievements of the period 1930-1980.
Papers/presentations will be accepted in Portuguese, Spanish and English.
Promoted by DOCOMOMO Sul Núcleo RS, the Seminar has the support of DOCOMOMO Brasil, the DOCOMOMOS Núcleos PR and SC, the Research and Postgraduate Program in Architecture – PROPAR/UFRGS and the Research and Postgraduate Program in Urbanism PROPUR/UFRGS and the National Association for Research and Postgraduate Studies in Architecture – ANPARQ
Suggested thematic lines
1. ENERGY & LIGHT
Architecture of urban transformer stations and substations, power generation plants, dams, architectural solutions for energy supply, distribution and storage. Urban, landscape and/or environmental insertion
2. WATER & SEWAGE
Architecture for water treatment plants, sewage pumping and treatment plants, reservoirs, water tanks, water castles, pipes, straightening and redirecting urban watercourses, drainage systems, flood containment, water mirrors, lakes and fountains. Urban, landscape and/or environmental insertion
3. AGRICULTURE & LIVESTOCK
Architecture of silos, warehouses and storage areas for grains and plant foods, supply centers and buildings for fruit and vegetable production, equipment related to rural and natural food production. Urban, landscape and/or environmental insertion
4. ROAD SYSTEM & PUBLIC WORKS
Architecture for public transport stations, intermodal stations, locks, navigation channels, gas stations, fuel refining plants, traffic routes, bridges, viaducts and works of art, accommodation for mobility-related conveniences, buildings related to alternative transport systems such as cycle paths, pedestrian paths and others. Urban landscape and/or environmental insertion
5. AIR CONDITIONING & SUSTAINABILITY
Architecture of solar protection systems and optimization of energy consumption, architectural solutions for optimizing thermal comfort, integration with natural elements and vernacular building systems, ecology and nature as an architectural parameter. Urban, landscape and/or environmental insertion
6. CRAFTS & INDUSTRY
Craft fairs and exhibitions. Spaces for making craft products. Architecture for industrial pavilions, first-generation factories and plants, industrial centers. Urban, landscape and/or environmental insertion
Lectures and Preparatory events
The Organizing Committee of the VIII DOCOMOMO SUL will announce, in due course, the conferences and preparatory events to be held before and during the event
Schedule
The Scientific Committee of the 8th DOCOMOMO South Seminar will select papers in two stages. In the first, abstracts (between 800 and 1000 words) will be selected for oral presentation. In the second stage, papers will be selected for publication in the event’s e-book
01/15/25 – Deadline for submitting abstracts;
02/20/25 – Announcement of those selected for oral presentation;
04/03/25 – Submission of texts for publication;
06/30/25 – Scheduled date for publication of the e-book
The authors and co-authors wiil be able to make their registration for the oral presentation after approval of the Scientific comitee.
For other participants, the registration can be made until the event’s date
