Normalmente se toca em pares ou em trios, e é subdivido em Quinto (o tambor menor, mais agudo), Conga (o tambor intermediário, médio) e Tumbadora (o tambor maior, grave), porém popularmente é chamado apenas de Congas, independente de se usar uma, duas ou três ou do tamanho do tambor.
