Technology background
Microalgae are photosynthetic microorganisms that form the basis of the food chain that supports more than 70% of the world's biomass, in addition to constituting an important resource for biotechnology. Spirulina platensis microalgae, Chlorella sp, Dunaliella salina, are recognized for producing secondary metabolites of high added value, as carotenoids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, vitamins, polysaccharides and phenolic compounds, being an important source of bioactive compounds that can exert beneficial effects on human health. Although the importance of microalgae is recognized, only a very small percentage of Brazilian biodiversity from this group is being maintained in crop collections. In the context of research into natural products with pharmacological potential, studies with compounds produced by microalgae stand out. In view of the potential use of phenolic compounds for the treatment of skin pathologies, and considering that the microalgae P. boryanum has the potential to be considered a substantial source of these compounds and there is a need for alternative extractive processes to obtain phenolic compounds from this microalgae. As well as, The need to develop pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations containing appropriate microalgae biomass derivatives to ensure the stability and availability of these active substances at the site of action becomes essential..
Technology description
The present invention relates to a process for extracting phenolic compounds from microalgae R&D. boryanum and the development of pharmaceutical or cosmetic formulations containing microalgae R&D. boryanum and its phenolic extract. The developed formulations can be used as a cosmetic or dermatological product with antioxidant properties., anti-inflammatory and healing treatments as an alternative to traditional treatments.
Problem Fixed
Invention patents that mention formulas for topical use containing microalgae are scarce.. ., products for cosmetic or dermatological use with active ingredients derived from microalgae. The growing interest and studies on the pharmacological properties of products of algal origin lead to improvements in cultivation processes, extraction of their bioactive compounds and the development of products containing these compounds. The most current formulations are based on bioactive compounds extracted, usually from fruits or plants. A disadvantage of the formulations we have is the use of different microalgae and the association with other synthetic components to meet the pharmacological proposals of the formulations.. There is a need for a simple, high-yield solution for extracting phenolic compounds, as, the development of a pharmaceutical form for topical use suitable for skin aging treatments, inflammatory processes and improvement in the healing process.
In the present invention, a possibility of insertion of new steps to disrupt the cell wall is developed, composed of polysaccharides from microalgae, improving the extraction of phenolic compounds produced by it. Like this, the inconveniences of associations described in other formulations are avoided, presenting for this the exclusive use of microalgae biomass or phenolic compounds from a single microalgae, simplified cultivation.
Applications
Extraction of high amounts of phenolic compounds from microalgae and development of a product for the treatment of skin aging, inflammatory processes and scarring in the skin, using a microalgal source, stand out as possible uses of this patent. There is the possibility of oral application of microalgae or phenolic compounds extracted from it, with anti-inflammatory activity proven by scientific tests in the FURG laboratory. Inflammation has been shown to underlie a number of diseases, the use of this microalgae for various chronic diseases can be explored.
This patent application constitutes not only a process for extracting phenolic compounds, but the development of a formulation with potential for use as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and healing with biomass or bioactive compounds such as phenolic extract from microalgae P. Boryanum, never before explored for dermatological and cosmetic purposes.
Advantages
Advantages include the practicality of the extraction process and the use of physical processes to replace extraction aids., as, the production of products for aging treatment, inflammatory and skin healing processes that contain natural compounds obtained from easily cultivable matrices
