Here in the Laboratório de Drosophila, at the Department of Genetics of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul – UFRGS, we study genetics, ecology and evolution of Drosophilidae; invertebrate cytogenetics and molecular biology..
Our lab was founded in September of 1949 by professor Antônio Rodrigues Cordeiro, after his return from Universidade de São Paulo (USP). There, he performed an internship and had classes on Evolutionary Genetics – taught by the then professor Theodosius Dobzhansky, one of the exponents on the modern synthetic theory of Evolution from the 20th century.
More than 58 master’s thesis and 29 dissertations used Drosophila as model organism under the most varied approaches, producing more than 200 publications. Currently, the students are developing the following lines of research:
- Ecology and diversity of Drosophilidae assamblages;
- Evolution and regulation of Transposable Elements;
- Metilation in the Drosophila genome;
- Evolution of chromosomes;
- Molecular phylogeny and evolution of Drosophilidae.
