Overview

A bit of history

The School of Engineering at Porto Alegre, founded in 1896, inaugurated its Institute for Electrotechnics in 1908. At the time, the Institute offered an undergraduate program in Mechanical-Electrical Engineering and a technical program for Mechanical-Electrical Technicians. From 19555 onwards, the program was unfolded into two branches, and the School of Engineering – now part of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) – started to offer an undergraduate program in Electrical Engineering. With a tradition that spans more than one century, this program has been the main responsible for the development of the electro-electronics industry in southern Brazil.
