Jean-Pictet Competition 2020

EN:

The International Humanitarian Law Clinic selected and prepared the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) team, composed by three members (Ana Paula Santos, Geysa Rodrigues and Julia Ospina), for the 34th edition of the Jean Pictet Competition, held in Denpasar, Indonesia, from 7th to 14th of March 2020. It is considered the most traditional competition in the field of International Humanitarian Law (IHL), encompassing universities from all over the world, and with the main purpose of exposing its competitors to simulated situations of armed conflict. It requires, therefore, that students deal with such scenarios from an essentially practical perspective, in order to “take the Law out of books”, based on the norms that concern International Law Humanitarian.

For a week, the UFRGS team actively took part of the tests that occurred in both morning and afternoon, and which consisted on exposing participants to concrete situations of fictitious international and non-international armed conflicts. Based on such situations, the teams were expected to resolve the issues raised with their knowledge of IHL topics and its related areas (such as International Criminal Law, International Refugee Law and International Human Rights Law). Furthermore, the team was assigned, throughout the Competition, with different roles, such as representatives of the Armed Forces of a certain State, members of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) ), legal advisors, as well as representatives of a specific National Society of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Thus, creativity and malleability to adapt to different conflict resolution approaches were crucial requirements in this Competition.

The week at the Jean Pictet Competition certainly represented one of the most enriching experiences in the lives of our UFRGS participants, as the focus of this Competition was never aimed exclusively to compete. The idea propagated by the organization, from the beginning to the end, was that, mixed with an acceptable level of competition, the students were encouraged to meet and learn, as well as – and mainly – enjoy. Indeed, the UFRGS team, besides focusing on competing in a healthy and equally committed level, was also successful in establishing an important network with judges from international courts, lawyers in the area of International Humanitarian Law, members of the United Nations, among other professionals who composed the jury. In addition, the team had the opportunity to learn about various themes of IHL and to experience, practically, the daily life of a professional who works in this area, being able, in this sense, to be more clear about the professional aspirations of each team member.

However, the central point brought by the Competition to our UFRGS participants was certainly the opportunity to perform, with undergraduate and graduate students from different parts of the world (which, like Brazil, are marginalized in academic and literary production in International Law,) a mutual exchange of similar experiences that emphasizes the difficulty of insertion of these Global South countries in the field of International Law as a whole. In short, the Competition represented a space of deep knowledge, learning and growth, especially because it made it possible to our participants to create bonds of friendship and professional future with other teams, also representatives of Global South countries. In this way, we hope that, in the near future, we can, united, create networks for the exchange of knowledge, information and content, in order to reinvent and occupy environments of which we have historically and systematically been excluded.

Thank you, Jean Pictet Competition, for providing this experience!
