FULL-SCALE TESTING

LAMEF has a great experience in full-scale testing simulating operational conditions for a variety of industries, applications and materials. We are capable to supply both standardized and customized tests, depending on our clients’ needs.

Using our diversified and state-of-the-art facilities and equipment we are able to carry out tensile, compression, torsion, bending, fatigue and collapse tests always following technical specifications required by our clients. If specific loading conditions are necessary, we can add loads of bending and torsion, for example. Moreover, the technical group of the laboratory is able to design various types of devices/fixtures and test frames in order to meet specific requirements.

Flexible Risers

Risers are subsea equipment designed to transport oil and gas from the well on the seabed to the production unit. Flexible pipes are composed of several metallic and polymeric layers, where each one has a specific function.

In 2003, LAMEF carried out the first full-scale fatigue test of a flexible riser in collaboration with Petrobras and one of its suppliers. Since then, the complexity and capacity of our tests grew strongly, and currently we are able to carry out tests with different types and loading configurations.

Currently, we are able to perform both static and dynamic tests with tensile, compressive, torsional and bending loads. If necessary, the components can also be pressurized internally and the annulus can be flooded with synthetic seawater with a flux of CO2. Moreover, our infrastructure also enables us to carry out wear and collapse tests (burst test and crush test).

Floating hoses

Currently, the production of oil in Brazil is basically offshore in deep waters hundreds of kilometers distant from the shore. In this extreme scenario, still there is not sufficient infrastructure to transport the production to shore.

Therefore, as soon as the oil is separated it is stored in the production unit and then off-loaded into vessel tanks through floating hoses. Sea conditions in south Atlantic are more severe than other places like the Gulf of Mexico, imposing to the floating hoses different types and magnitudes of mechanical loading.

LAMEF is able to provide full-scale testing of floating hoses, subjecting them to tensile loads, torsion or bending simulating operating conditions which these components are exposed.

Rigid Risers

Rigid risers are basically steel pipes with a specific length joined by a girth weld. They stand out as more suitable equipment for deep waters and also are easier to manufacture than flexible risers. Without cladding by a corrosion resistant alloy, the application of these subsea equipment is limited to less severe environment conditions.

For this product segment, our testing capabilities are quite similar to those available for flexible risers, which include both static and dynamic loads. More specifically for rigid risers, we are also capable to carry out fatigue tests based on resonance principles or variations in internal pressure. In this later case, tests can be carried out up to final rupture in a customized bunker available in the laboratory.

Subsea umbilicals

Umbilicals are key equipment used to control subsea trees, manifolds, jumpers, sleds etc. They are composed of electrical and fiber optic cables, metallic tubes, hoses, steel wires, among other. Tests of these several components separately often fail to capture the real behavior in operation. Thus, full-scale tests are necessary to evaluate the interactions that occur and their effect on the umbilical mechanical global behavior.

In recent years, we have carried out full-scale tests for umbilicals with various types of loading. We are able to perform both static and dynamic tests for various sample sizes and also according to specific requirements of our clients.

Steel wire ropes

Steel wire ropes were originally developed for lifting loads in mines in the first decade of the nineteenth century. Currently, they are components of high responsibility used for lifting, carrying or towing loads in various industrial segments.

With the increasing demand for loading bearing capacity, qualification and verification of the mechanical behavior of these cables through full-scale testing became extremely important in order to avoid catastrophic failures in operation.

LAMEF carries out full-scale tensile tests of steel cables in order to qualify them according to technical specifications. Using our testing benches we can operate safely during standardized tests or customized ones.
