abstract
Accurate monitoring of evapotranspiration in its spatial and temporal components poses a major challenge for the understanding of energy and hydrological partitioning between the surface and the atmosphere. Therefore, understanding the behavior of the annual and interannual seasonal variability of the evapotranspiration process becomes necessary to understand the global climate-hydrological system and how the vegetation responds to changes in these systems. Thus, the main advantage of remote sensing estimates is to capture their spatial variability. The approach used in this study sought to answer the following questions: (i) What is the annual and interannual seasonal behavior of the evapotranspiration process in the State of Rio Grande do Sul? (ii) What is the response of vegetation to hydrological variations and the occurrence of extreme events (droughts) that occurred in the State in the period 2000-2011? (iii) What is the accuracy of evapotranspiration estimates based on remote sensing models, considering the closure of the water balance in the medium and long term? (iv) Can models of evapotranspiration estimation based on remote sensing data present sensitivity to different land uses and coverages or to ET anomalies? In this context, the main contribution of this research project was to analyze the spatial and temporal behavior of evapotranspiration in the State of Rio Grande do Sul and to understand the vegetation response in relation to the changes in the hydrological and climatic cycles.
