Pollutants Simulation Integrated with GIS

Simulation of Pollutants Releases Impacts on River Basins Water Quality Coupled with Geographic Information System

Start: 2011

Completed: March 2013

Nature: Research

Description:

The work aimed contributing to improve the management of water quality on river basins, by meeting the following objectives:

  • Development of a water quality model that allows the simulation of pollutants releases with various durations into rivers;
  • Test and application of a methodology based on the superposition of one-dimensional analytical solutions of the advection-dispersion equation for the simulation;
  • Development of coupling solutions with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to expand and simplify the use of the model;;
  • Development of methods and tools for spatial and hydraulic data preparation, making the model applicable in situations with low data availability;
  • Checking and critical analysis of all the solutions adopted; and
  • That the model developed may work as a versatile tool and can be used for planning purposes, real-time control and a posterior analyses of water quality on basins at multiple spatial scales

Results:
As a product of the research developed in this work, all methodologies and proposed solutions, both for calculating pollutants concentration, and for integration with Geographic Information Systems, were applicable and had satisfactory results. Therefore, it is expected that the concepts and solutions tested and adopted serve as the basis for various other applications.

Also, as a product of the research, SIAQUA-IPH, a mathematical model for simulation of pollutant releases integrated with GIS, was developed.

All results of the research can be found in the following master’s dissertation (in portuguese):
