Combining SWOT observations with modelling for South America water systems study – SWOT-MOD

Description:

The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission (Durand et al. 2010), a satellite using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) in an interferometry mode will provide for the first time satellite-based high spatial resolution and temporal sampling observations of the continental surface waters. SWOT has a great potential to improve the knowledge about South American systems and improve the hydrologic/hydrodynamic modelling tools that are being used to address water related problems in this region. There are already several past and present satellite missions, as satellite altimeters (e.g. ENVISAT, JASON, ICESAT, ICESAT2, Altika) and imagery satellites (e.g. LandSat, JERS-1, Alos Palsar) that provide information about surface waters and there is still lot to do to explore them. However, SWOT is the first mission designed for measuring surface waters and will provide simultaneous and detailed spatio-temporal information about river heights, width, slope, discharge, lake height and storage. These great opportunities come with major challenges, as several questions still exist on the potentialities of SWOT and the proper methods for optimal use of this new information in South America. For example: how SWOT like data can be used to elucidate on hydrodynamics of major South American rivers and wetlands and lakes (e.g. Amazon, Pantanal; Paraná)? How to combine SWOT data with South American regional or detailed hydrologic and hydrodynamic models to improve model parameters and estimates of hydrological fields? How next generation of models should evolve in preparation to ingest SWOT-like data? And what can be done meanwhile, with the current satellite observations, to work towards answering these questions and prepare the SWOT mission? In this context, the overall objective of the proposal is to explore the potential of the combination of SWOT observation (in addition to other sources of remote sensing data) and modelling for the study of large to medium size water systems in South America (e.g. Amazon rivers and wetlands, Pantanal wetlands, La Plata Reservoir System, large lakes)..
